Do you have an oscilloscope? if you have then you can check for data on the serial wire (pin 9). Without a scope or a diagnostic interface then its difficult to do any further fault finding, you could at least test for 5V on pin 9 if you have a voltmeter.

Sorry , I was all wrong. My GV is equipped with an immobolizer, the presence of which is not mentionned in the user manual.

I made test using the ECM and ICM test connectors.

The code given by the ECM is 83

The code given by the ICM is 23

From the documentation both codes mean "serial data link wire"

This afternoon I tested the continuity of the serial line between ECM and ICM, and also with pin 9 of the OBD connector.

everything is correct.

The next step in the flow chart should be to replace ICM and ECM with tested ones, impossible for me.

Any other idea to go-on  ?

The airbag diagnostics use the SDL interface.

Hello Rhinoman,

I have downloaded the document you indicated and began to read it.

At a first look, retreiving of errror codes seems to be done only by reading glow plug light flashes as explained in the FSM .

My vehicle does not seem to be equipped with immobiliser so I don't see the use of this connector.

Thanks for help

Regards John

Hello Fordem

I found the OBD connector with 3 wires cabled ,as you told near the steering  wheel.

I had  removed the plastic cover but was looking left side towards the fuse box.

The connector and wiring were hidden below the yellow wiring harness for the airbag.

Unfortunately Rhinoman explained factory tools have no support for the diesel models prior to OBD2, so I'll try reading  error codes from the glow plug light.

Thanks for your answer,

Regards

John

Hello everyone

My name is John and live in France

I have a Grand Vitara 2.0 TD  ,year 2000 and I would like to be able to read the error codes

ID number JSAFTD32V00124644

Engine LSN97FB22

ECU Denso 33920-68D20  RF3A 18 881A

The  test connector seems to be a 8P090-MT female connector from sumimoto with the 8 pins  fitted

I don't have a check engine light, in case of problem the glow plug indicator light flashes and the engine does not start

I have not seen this type of connection described on your site , but you have so many things  perhaps i missed something.

Any idea that might help ?

However thank you for your site where i have already learnt may things about EBD

Please excuse for my english

Regards

John

As far as I can tell the J1962 connector only seems to be used for the immobiliser on these models, the factory tools have no support for the diesel models prior to OBD2. The FSM supplement for your model can be downloaded here:

99500-68D00.pdf

You should have a six-pin connector inside the engine bay.

I don't think you're looking at the correct connector - get down under the steering wheel and look up in the corner where the dash meets the transmission tunnel - you should find a connector that looks like this...

You might be able to locate it a little easier if you remove the panel under the steering wheel - there are either two or three screws along the bottom edge and another one behind the door of the little storage cubby.
