71EE0 is a Vitara ECU rather than a GV ECU, the ECU is the same but with slightly different mapping because the X90 is lighter and has higher gearing. There is more information on these ECUs on my website and it is linked from this forum.

Thanks for your input so far! I just went to my local breakers and got an ECU/Immobiliser/key from a GV (ECU number 33920-71EE0, my original one is 33920-79E50) The car now runs perfectly (in my [ventilated!] garage), what would be different about the GV ECU that I should be concerned with? It has the same engine, so presumably same fuel/ignition maps.

It is quite common,usually after a jump start although its usually a permanent fault. If the immo has losts its memory then the immo and ECU need to be repaired and the immo then programmed with the key codes.
